A revolutionary conservative treatment
for joint pain has arrived

Orthobiologics are materials that surgeons use in modern surgical procedures to promote rapid natural healing of injuries. One of our products that falls into this category is the Lipo-Stem Duo system which harvests your Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC’s) from your adipose tissue (fat stores).

Mesenchymal Stem Cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that utilizes the body’s natural healing ability to repair and regenerate damaged or diseased cells, tissue and organs. There are two main sources of stem cells:

Bone Marrow; Your Stem Cells can be harvested through the Iliac Crest of the Pelvic bone where they are in their highest concentration within your bones and added to bone substitutes to create an enhanced bone graft. It can also be used in the treatment of joint pain and conditions in elite athletes where there are in sufficient fat stores for the use of the Lipo-Stem Duo system.

Adipose Tissue; Adipose tissue is the ideal donor site and has a higher concentration of stem cells than your bone marrow. Bone Marrow contains one stem cell per 100 thousand cells where as your adipose tissue contains 1 cell per 100 cells. Using the Lipo-Stem Duo system makes it easy to harvest these through a minimally invasive technique with incredibly low risk to you, the patient.

  • Minimally Invasive Procedure
  • No Culture or Manipulation of Stem Cells Required
  • No Enzymes or Centrifuge Required (Viability/ Quality Retained)
  • Single Treatment Where Joint Injected at Time Adipose Tissue Derived
  • Rapid Relief of Pain
  • Accelerated Healing
  • Improved Range of Motion
  • Potentially Slow the Progression of Osteoarthritis

Applications

Your Adiposed derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells can be used for;

  • Orthopaedics
  • Maxilllofacial Surgery
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Pain Therapy
  • Wound Treatment
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • General Surgery

HOW IT WORKS

A Surgeon will inject local anaesthetic into the area where the lipo aspiration will be performed.  The three sources for this are the abdomen, buttocks or thigh with the preferred location being the abdomen.  A very small incision is made to administer a Tumescent Solution (a pre-prepared mixture of Saline, anaesthetic and adrenaline) into the fat by way of a small 16g cannula.

The Tumescent Solution is well researched as an effective method to release the fat from surrounding tissue to provide a healthier aspiration (extraction) of the adipose fat. A waiting time of 10 – 12 minutes then allows the Tumescent Solution to take full effect.

A smaller 13g cannula is then attached to a Vacuum Lock Syringe and the Surgeon will perform an aspiration of the Tumescent treated area and obtain the required amount of adipose tissue to perform your specific procedure.  Most treatments will require as little as 50 ml of aspirated tissue to obtain adequate stem cells after processing to perform your procedure.

The filter is then primed with Saline and your collected Adipose tissue is injected into the Lipo-Stem Duo device, completely suspended in the saline to preserve stem cell viability.

No enzymes are added to your aspirated tissue and no centrifuge is required to separate your Stem Cells from the tissue.  This is important as both these treatments are researched to show that they impair cell viability. Further, your Mesenchymal Stem Cells do not require further culture or manipulation in a laboratory which obviously delays the treatment to the injured joint.

Saline is constantly supplied to the filter and your Adipose tissue is washed through the first 1000um filter to eliminate the oily and bloody residues which cause inflammation.  Once this process occurs the constant supply of saline then further washes the treated tissue through the 51 um filter which microfragments the tissue by retaining the fibrotic component of the tissue and creating a finer structural matrix.

The purified undifferentiated Microfragmented Stem Cells are then extracted from the system and immediately ready to be injected.  We will assist in connecting you with the highly trained surgeons currently using this technique in your region.

TREATMENT PREPARATION

Although minimal, this is a surgical procedure that requires proper diagnosis of your condition by the appropriately trained qualified practitioner.  This will require you to consult your General Practitioner for referral to obtain x-rays and an MRI of the injured joint.  This will be both beneficial in correct diagnosis of your condition, determine the advancement of any Osteoarthritis or structural damage and therefore your suitability and expected outcomes of this treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT/ RESULTS

Results will vary depending on the severity of your condition and the advancement of any osteoarthritis but through the presence of Cytokines you will experience a rapid reduction in swelling and pain.  You will also experience increased mobility of the joint.

WHO IS NOT SUITABLE

There are no contraindications for the use of this product, however after consultation your surgeon will have the final determination that you will benefit from this procedure and there are no comorbidities that will adversely affect your outcome.

POST-TREATMENT CARE

Your surgeon will provide you with their post procedure guidelines but in general you will have a very small incision that will require closing and kept free from germs/ contaminates as any open wound. Your surgeon may also recommend the usage of a compression bandage around the abdomen.

As each patient is different you may experience mild pain, discomfort or an awareness around your aspiration site.

To protect the viable stem cells that have been injected you must not exceed 15 kg of weight bearing on the joint for a period of 3 days. For hip, knee and ankle treatments the use of crutches is necessary. You will notice an immediate reduction in pain and may be tempted to use the treated joint, tendon or ligament but it is crucial to reduce use of the treated area for 3 days for the ultimate responses.

FOLLOW-UP & NEXT STEPS

Your surgeon will provide patient specific details for you. This is a Surgical Procedure and therefore you must strictly adhere to all instructions recommended by your surgeon.

You should expect that your surgeon will suggest no strenuous activity for a period of 3-5 days so therefore plan your treatment around these guidelines but you must always consult your surgeon about their expected outcomes and your post procedure behaviours.
